BATIAS to celebrate 20th Anniversary at their AGM

SOUTH Essex charity BATIAS Independent Advocacy Service will be celebrating 20 years of supporting people with learning disabilities to speak up for their rights when they hold this year’s AGM on 15th November 2012 at Orsett Hall Hotel.

Carole Cecil, Chief Executive, said, “BATIAS was originally set up to support the rights of people moving into the community when the large residential campuses such as South Ockendon hospital were closed in the early 1990s. Now that people with learning disabilities live as independently as possible in their local community, or in much smaller residential homes, it does not mean that they are always listened to or their rights upheld, therefore BATIAS has continued to be there for them over the last 20 years to make sure that others listen to what they are saying.”

The organisation has grown a great deal over the 20 years and now offers a wide range of advocacy support in South Essex, Thurrock and Southend. Formal Advocates work with people one-to-one while Self-advocacy Groups enable people to gain the confidence to speak up for themselves. Citizen advocate volunteers support people to get more involved in their communities such as going to a sporting event or just having a coffee in the local cafe. As well as the 3 types of advocacy service there is the Stars in the Sky project which runs as a Friendship and Dating Club and the Café4U Work experience Project based at the Thameside Complex Grays.

Carole went on to say, “It’s been a challenging 20 years, but BATIAS is still here so we thought we should celebrate this great achievement at our AGM by following up with a celebratory party for our members and supporters at BATIAS. I would like to say a very big ‘Thank You’ to Orsett Hall Hotel for donating the use of the Whitmore Suite so that we can celebrate in style!”
