THE DEPUTY LEADER of the Thurrock Conservatives has questioned the ruling Labour council’s commitment to a Fair debt policy.
Cllr Rob Gledhill asked the portfolio holder for central services, cllr Phil Smith, how many Liability Orders had been issued by the council in the past year.
Cllr Smith told the chamber that there had been 3,468.
Cllr Gledhill expressed his concerns that there was still too many reports of a heavy handed approach.
He said: “There appears to be one corporate complaint regarding council tax collection every day.
“YOu have a shoot now, ask questions later method of enforcement.”
Cllr Gledhill was part of a Thurrock Council team along with Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) that developed a fair policy on recovering outstanding debts.
