Hockey: Firsts taught a lesson by Essex Univ.

Thurrock 3 v 4 Essex University

Thurrock started brightly in this SE Division 3 home encounter against a physical university team and scored inside 10 minutes from a penalty corner converted by Tommy Ings.

The away team put Tees under immediate pressure but found it hard due to some good saves from goal keeper Danny Hick and the defence of Tommy Ing, Andy Sargeant and Luke Danbrook. Tees had a handful of chances to extend the lead but squandered many due to sloppy hockey including poor passing.

Essex University began to play the better hockey and was rewarded with a goal before the half time whistle. After the break Tees started to play better with early goal from captain Steve Abbott but Essex Uni quickly equalised with another penalty corner. Midfielders Daniel O’Shaughnessy, Nick Stapleton and man of the match Jordan Salmon worked hard but could not stop the away team from scoring from open play.

A well worked goal was created when Christian Jenkins passed to Andre Rudder who set up Abbott for his second of the game however the away team levelled through a scramble in the D. With both teams pushing players forward Tees yet again missed a few chances and it was Essex Uni who scored within the last five minutes of the game taking all three points.

Thurrock men’s coach Andre Rudder said ‘Thurrock need to improve in all departments if they stand a chance of promotion next year’.
