THURROCK 3rd 2 v 3 WITHAM 3rd
THIS was a hard fought match against a team that lead division 7 SE having only suffered one defeat. The visitors attacked from the first whistle and Thurrock’s defence had to work hard to withstand the pressure. After 10 minutes Witham got the lead their efforts deserved from a short corner which crept inside the post.
Thurrock battled hard and turned the game around to claim the upper hand with forwards midfielders Lawrence Jackson Josh Bridges and Alex Taylor linking together to draw the Witham defence out of position allowing attackers Michael Fleming and Liam Birch to drive into the area. Eventually Thurrock were rewarded when Fleming beat the keeper from close range.
Soon after the start of the second half a quickly taken free hit on the Thurrock 25m line allowed the Witham forward to dribble through and flick the ball into the net past the advancing Danny Hick. This spurred Thurrock into life and Jo Harvey made a run down the right before passing inside for Lawrence Jackson to dribble into the D before unleashing a shot which left the Witham keeper rooted to the spot.
The game flowed from end to end with Fleming being unlucky to see a string of shots saved by the agile keeper, whilst man of the match, Ethan Pinion worked tirelessly to in defence to cut out Witham’s threat. With two minutes to go Witham crept into the lead from a well-drilled short corner leaving insufficient time for Thurrock to come back.
