Indoor cricket: Runs galore as under-14 league starts

THERE were runs galore as the U14 indoor six a side cricket league started at Grays School on Friday (7th December). The teams batting first in their respective fixtures scored in excess of 100 runs each. Brothers Shameer and Bilal Quershi hit 47 not out and 33 respectively as Thurrock “A” posted 120 for the loss of five wickets, but their opponents, Thurrock “B” made a valiant effort by achieving 106-5 mainly through the efforts of Alfie Feeney, 32, and Connor Ramm, with 22 runs to his name.

Wayne Gibbon and Harry Lockyer were both undefeated for Orsett “A” over their “B” team counterparts with the “A” team posting a lofty 147 for the loss of just one wicket. Gibbon finished on 27 while Lockyer contributed two runs fewer. Orsett “B” responded with 70 all out, as Joe Pumfrett caused maximum damage with the ball by taking four wickets for just 15 runs.

Horndon on the Hill completed the opening night run-fest by accumulating 104 for the loss of five wickets against Belhus. Sam Smith led from the front with a match-winning innings of 35 not out, after which Belhus were dismissed for 71. Billy Maidment (Belhus) and Callum Newton (Horndon) picked up two wickets each. Friday’s fixtures (14th December): 6pm – Orsett “A” v Belhus; 7pm – Thurrock “B” v Orsett “B”; 8pm – Thurrock “A” v Stanford le Hope.
