NATIONAL Express train operator c2c is appealing for information from local residents to help create a memorial to railway workers from the London, Tilbury and Southend railway who were killed during the First and Second World War.
There is no local memorial to railway workers from the route, now known as Essex Thameside and operated by c2c, who were killed during the conflicts. Individuals are instead remembered on a war memorial in Derby, as the LTS railway was at that time part of the London Midland Scottish Railway company, but details of which area victims were from are not recorded.
c2c Communications Manager Chris Atkinson said: “The current c2c route was of vital strategic importance during the wars, linking the Tilbury port and the artillery ranges at Shoeburyness with the City of London and London’s docklands area. We know the railway was bombed during both World Wars while many railwaymen would also have served in the armed forces. We want to create a lasting local memorial to the brave railway workers who were killed in these conflicts – but we need the expertise of local residents to help build our knowledge about the victims.”

It would be a fitting tribute for every Station to have a small plaque with a main memorial at Fenchurch St Station.
