Football: Carlos winner fires Grays Ath into the record books

Ryman Div One North

Thamesmead Town 1 v 2 Grays Ath

Report courtesy of

JOAO Carlos has fired Blues into the history books with a late winner to give Blues a magnificent 17th straight win in the league

The league champions were behind as early as the 2nd minute when Baff Addae put the hosts ahead then Dave East was withdrawn with an injury after 12 minutes, replaced by Ryan Kirby.

Jack West missed a penalty just before half-time and another inspired substitution by manager Hakan Hayrettin introduced the pace of Jared Small for Jeff Hammond and it was Small that brought Grays level 11 minutes into the second period.

The game was heading for a draw but tricky winger Joao Carlos had other ideas when he stroked home from the left in stoppage time.

Late goals have been a feature of their performances in recent weeks and they speak volumes about the attitude and commitment of a squad that has set a league record of 17 consecutive victories to firmly established itself as one of the best to grace the Ryman League.

Grays Athletic are just one point away from a remarkable 100-point haul for the season with 2 games left to play.

Next up is a visit to Heybridge Swifts on Tuesday night before their final game of the season next Saturday against Waltham Abbey at Rush Green.
