Ryman Premier
East Thurrock United 2 v 0 Wingate and Finchley
THE ROCKS reinforced their play-off credentials with a competent 2-0 victory against Wingate and Finchley at Rokkery Hill.
Thurrock dominated from the start. In the 5th minute, Sam Higgins had a gentle lob kicked off the line by Wingate defender, Daniel Braithwaite.
However from the sideline, boss John Coventry was getting angry by the players sloppy mistakes. With just four games left, this could be the difference between premier and conference south.
At the same time, the Wingate defenders were far too aggressive and conceding territory with needless fouls.
The game got a little bit lost with neither team able to carve out a clear chance. The Rocks were lucky that Wingate’s radar was so askew.
The best chance came in the 35th minute when Kye Ruel broke on the left side of the box, rounded the keeper and squared the ball to Sam Higgins but the top scorer blazed the ball over the bar.
Another chance was carved out through a series of mistimed passes but again it came to nothing.
One can only imagine what Covo said to the players at half time.
In the 52nd minute, Kye Ruel crossed over from the right, the keeper couldn’t get hold of it on his line and Sam Higgins was able to bundle the ball over the line.
East Thurrock scored the second in the 68th minute. David Bryant laid the ball off into the path of Sam Collins who sent a howitzer into the net.
The Rocks now seemed a lot more relaxed and were able to stroke the ball around the park in the spring sunshine.
The rocks had a few more chances but were able to steer the team to a victory which saw them enter the play off positions for the first time.
The Rocks go on to play Harrow Borough on Tuesday at home at 7.45pm.
