David Gold inspires South Essex College students

STUDENTS from the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at South Essex College heard an inspiring talk from entrepreneur-duo, David and Vanessa Gold.

David Gold and his daughters Vanessa and Jacqueline are responsible for some of the most successful high street brands including Ann Summers and KnickerBox.

David has also revolutionised a previously struggling Birmingham City Football Club before turning his hand to West Ham Football Club, buying a 62% stake in 2009.

Speaking to 40 BTEC Level 3 Diploma Enterprise and Entrepreneurship students from the Southend and Thurrock Campuses, the Gold’s inspired students with tales about their entrepreneurial journey and answered questions on their biggest achievements and also some of their greatest mistakes.

Vanessa and David highlighted the importance of savvy business skills including keeping on top of costs, making strong decisions, protecting a brand and understanding the customer. They focused on the success which opportunism can bring, and emphasised the importance of passion in building a business.

The masterclass is one in a series of unique opportunities made available to students at the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy, where they are given the chance to hear first-hand from inspirational business leaders, helping to encourage and nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Alice Barnard, CEO of the Peter Jones Foundation, the organisation which runs thePeter Jones Enterprise Academy, said:

“I am thrilled that David and Vanessa were able to lead the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy masterclass at South Essex College. Successful figures such as the Golds help the students to realise what dedication and hard work can achieve.”

David Gold, owner and Chairman, Gold Group International and Chairman, West Ham United Football Club commented:

“It was a most enjoyable evening. I hope I inspired the people here this evening because they certainly inspired me.”
