AS part of the regular summer schedule of works, Thurrock Council’s environment department will be carrying out work at war memorials across the borough.

Every year the council cleans, maintains and plants flowers at the memorials to make sure they are in good order.

However, this year the council is aware there are numerous tributes which have been placed at memorials over the past few weeks paying tribute to Drummer Lee Rigby.

The council wants to ensure that, should any person who placed a tribute wish to keep it, they should be able to do so.

From Monday, 17 June, the council will be removing dead flowers and other items and it is urging people who put them there to collect their tribute from the before any work takes place.

The council will also collect all non-perishable items and store them for a short period should people be unable to collect the item before 17 June

Lucy Magill, the council’s director for environment, said: “We understand the significance of the tributes that have been placed at the war memorials over recent weeks and we are in contact with the Help for Heroes charity to see if we can pass on the written condolences to the family of Drummer Lee Rigby.

“Unfortunately it is imperative that the memorials are properly cleaned and prepared so they are in pristine condition for the summer and autumn and for events such as Fly the Flag Day on 24 June and the Remembrance services in November.”

The council is asking that tributes are collected where possible before 17 June, or if somebody wishes to collect a stored tribute, they should call 01375 413615 or email [email protected]
