YOUR THURROCK understands that the now disused Tilbury fire station is at the centre of a major investigation into historic “serious criminal activity’ allegations.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service has over fifty fire stations but it is alleged “criminal activity” in a station that closed down over sixteen years ago that is being investigated.
It is understood that the investigation centres on “initiation ceremonies”.
The investigation took a tragic turn earlier this week after serving fire officer Martin Sibley, 48, was found hanged, just hours after Essex Police had spoken to him.
Essex Police has not said whether Mr Sibley was spoken to as a potential suspect, victim or witness.
The father-of-two was one of up to 100 people being questioned so far. YT understands that people living in Australia and Canada have been contacted.
An inquest into the death of Mr Sibley was opened and adjourned on Friday afternoon in Chelmsford.
