ON WEDNESDAY June 26 Thurrock branch of U3A held its monthly meeting at the Civic Hall, Grays.
Chairperson Maggie Whitbread introduced the speaker, Steve Lester, member of the Titanic Historical Society, resplendent in the uniform of a 2nd. officer of The White Star Line.
Standing in front of an impressive display of photographs and memorabilia, he took the audience on a comprehensive journey from the design stage, construction and launch right through to the disaster that put an end to the proud ship and so many of her passengers and crew.
He went on to say that the lessons learnt from the tragedy resulted in extensive legislation concerning the provision of lifeboats and rafts and the disciplines regarding safety.
