A fun summer down at Mardyke Woods

THIS summer, Mardyke Woods in South Ockendon is hosting fun, free activities for the whole family to enjoy, with the help of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Veolia North Thames Trust.

For a fun afternoon with your little ones, bring a picnic and favourite teddy to a Teddy Bears Picnic on Thursday 15th August 12pm – 3pm by the Cherwell Grove playground. Activities will include meeting farm animals, giant garden games, face painting and a soft play area.

Looking for something different to do with the older kids? Sign up to one of four free bushcraft sessions on Monday 12th and Friday 30th August, where you will spend a morning or afternoon learning how to make shelters, camp fires and rope bridges (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult). Sessions are free, but must be booked in advance through the Community Ranger on 01708 642964 or at thameschase@forestry.gsi.gov.uk.

As well as fun activities, this project is providing opportunities for young people to get involved in caring for and using the woods – The Gateway Academy in Grays visited in June for their annual Community Day, doing an amazing job at filling a skip with rubbish during a ‘Big Tidy Up’.

The woods are also a great educational tool. Somers Heath Primary School have been out in the woods, with over 200 pupils visiting during their Science Week at the end of June.
