Athletics: Youngsters lead the way for Harriers

THE YOUNG Thurrock Harrier athletes shone at the last EYAL league match of the season. There were some great performances from every age group with personal best performances being smashed again.

Under 13 girls age group lead the charge on the personal bests with some fantastic results kicking off with Kendra Nwaelene in the 100m with a time of 14.0s and again in the high jump with an improvement of 5cm to 1.25m. Lola Omowanile improved her 200m time to 32.7s and Jessica Whitebread set a new pb for the 70m hurdles at 13.4s and a massive new pb in the long jump to 4.16m.

Monet Jervier also gained two new pb’s, 7.12m in shot putt and 1.30m in the high jump. Megan Smith was another double pb athlete from the day gaining her pb’s in long jump with a huge leap of 3.38m and 5.62m in shot.

Under 13 boys gave the girls a run for their money with personal bests coming from Riley Tripp 17.0s in the 100m and 3.42m for his long jump. Reece Scott improved his 1500m pb by knocking off an incredible 5.9s with the new pb being 5:12s. Liam Chivers smashed his pb in the 800m with a time of 2:34s. Aaron Wong improved his shot putt with his best effort of 8.19m. William Adeyeye leapt a massive pb of 1.58m winning the U13b high jump, William also won the 75m hurdles and the shot putt.

All the athletes gave their best on a day when they knew that finishing well as a team would mean that they would complete the last match of the season on a high note. Harriers came 2nd overall and have made the plate final on September 8th making this one of the most successful season for the young teams for quite a few years.
