A TEENAGER has been charged following an alleged assault on a steward at a football match.
The 16-year-old (who cannot be named for legal reasons) will appear at Basildon Youth Court on August 27th.
The alleged incident is said to have taken place during the pre-season friendly between Aveley and AFC Hornchurch at Mill Field, Aveley on Monday (Aug 5th).
The steward did not require hospital treatment.
In relation to general conduct at their football ground, a spokesperson for Aveley FC said:
“We await the outcome of the case but in the meantime, we will remind fans that we have a general code of conduct at our matches and expect all supporters to abide by that at all times.
The incident came after concerns were raised at the end of last season at the behaviour of a number of younger fans who have started following the team.
The play-off fixture between Maldon versus Aveley was punctuated with foul, abusive and homophobic chanting by the young supporters.
YT understands that at that time, the club spoke to supporters after the game regarding the language.
