Hockey: Thurrock suffer heavy defeat to Witham

Witham 3rds 5 v 0 Thurrock 2nds

FOR the second week in a row, a shortage of players in this team forced the cancellation of the 3rd team game and promotion of that team to fulfil this game in Div. 6SE.

From the start the home team dominated the play and went into the lead from a short corner after only five minutes.

A second goal five minutes later seemed to prophecy a heavy defeat for Thurrock, however it spurred them into life and within minutes, Lawrence Jackson was unlucky to shoot inches wide after collecting a pass from Luke Strudwick and dribbling past 4 players in the area.

Debut player Ryan Jones seized on clearance by Witham and fired in a shot from a narrow angle which was forced around the keeper by the diving keeper. A missed tackle allowed Witham to add a 3rd goal from close range after 25 minutes.

In the last minute of the first half, Witham added a fourth goal from a short corner which just crept between player and post.

In the second half it was Thurrock that played the better hockey with Jay and Jake Lamb linking together on the right to cut out several threatening moves by the home team and allow Jones and Jackson freedom to drive at the Witham defence and force their keeper into a string of desperate saves whilst strong defending by Aaron Saunders and Danny Hick protected Thurrock’s keeper Garry O’Donohue.

With five minutes to go, against the run of play, Witham added to their score from a well-taken short corner.
