Football: Vital win for Fleet over play-off rivals

Ryman League North

Dereham Town 0 v 2 Thurrock at Aldiss Park

By Bill Robinson

THURROCK recorded a fantastic result, beating fellow play-off chasers Dereham Town away from home.

Before the game started Mark Stimson’s side were three points and two places above their opponents. Not only do they now have a healthy lead over Dereham, they have now moved up to second in the table following Heybridge Swifts shock defeat at home to Waltham Forest.

VCD Athletic also lost meaning Thurrock are just four points behind the league leaders.

A fairly even game saw few chances in the first half but it was Thurrock who had the killer instinct with two late goals. Spence scored the first in the 75th minute before Knight wrapped up the points with three minutes to play.

It must have seemed like Christmas had come early for Thurrock with a big win for them and some very kind results elsewhere, pushing them right into the promotion challenge. It makes the trip to VCD on New Year’s Day very interesting. Next up for Thurrock, Chatham Town.
