Belhus Cricket Club Player Awards 2013

The Belhus Cricket Club Annual Player Awards presentation evening was held recently at the Fireman’s Club in Purfleet.

IN THE Shepherd Neame Essex League (the premier cricket league in Essex), all of the club’s five Saturday XIs performed satisfactorily with outstanding seasons being enjoyed by the 2nd XI (who finished Winners of Division Three under the captaincy of Mark Sansom), and the 5th XI (who finished Runners-Up in their Division). And having been undefeated for the past three seasons, the Sunday 1st XI finished as Champions of the Essex Sunday League (East Division).

With around 210 senior and junior matches being arranged during 2013, the club’s programme of fixtures was one of the most extensive in Essex. 16 years old Sam Hall was the club’s leading wicket-taker with 55 wickets while Roy Heffernan was the leading run-scorer with 1,634 runs.

Continued expansion of the club’s playing membership enabled it to field a 6th XI for the very first time and the fledgling Ladies XI made an enthusiastic start under captain Lynne Bonner. The Youth Section again fielded teams at Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 16 levels, and another successful week-long Youth Tour to Sussex was arranged by manager Richard Waters with more than 50 members joining the tour party.

‘Player of the Year’ awards were presented to: Joe Joyce (Saturday 1st XI), Roy Heffernan (Saturday 2nd XI), Mudassir Mukhtar (Saturday 3rd XI), Paul Hall (Saturday 4th XI), Ryan Wells (Sunday 1st XI), Greg Mendham (Sunday 2nd XI), Allison Edmeades (Ladies XI), Mark Fogg (Under 15s), Billy Turley (Under 13s), Evan Gray (Under 11A), Frankie Debono (Under 11B). And the ‘Club Member of the Year’ award was presented to Barry Ruck.

Looking back on the season, a delighted club secretary, Tom Thompson, (whose father and grandfather both played for the club) said, “2013 was another successful season for Belhus Cricket Club both on and off the field, and we are pleased to be able to continue to provide so much cricket to so many members. And we now embark upon a full programme of indoor cricket during the winter months!”
