Thurrock 1 v 0 Chatham Town 0
Ryman League North
Fred Kirk reports…..
The Fleet snatched a late winner to close gap on leaders VCD Athletic by just a single point.
Thurrock started off the game well and their first chance came in the 3rd minute when a lovely cross met the head of Ross Wall which was saved by Jack Bradshaw in the Chatham Town goal. Thurrock then had to wait till the 44th minute to have another chance on goal when Jack Bradshaw saved David Knight’s shot that seemed to be creeping into the bottom right hand corner. It was a poor first half and at the break it was Thurrock 0-0 Chatham Town.
The Fleet started the second half of exactly how they started of the first as Ross Wall had another early chance but failed to score. The game was all Thurrock but they were failing to create any clear cut chances. The home side then seemed to put some urgency into their performance with the support of the home fans. Captains Lewis Spence then made a brilliant run down the middle but his shot went straight at the Chatham keeper.
The referee added on three minutes and the home side had a corner. The corner flew into the back post and was met by the head of Simon King to give The Fleet a late lead. Alfie May wasn’t happy with the decision as he felt he was fouled in the process off the goal and was given a second booking for arguing with the ref. It was all happening in stoppage time as 10 men Chatham Town had a corner which they sent their keeper up for. The corner was cleared by Thurrock’s defence and the away side’s keeper was out of goal as David Knight made a brilliant run down the left wing taking on player after player but he failed to score as he shoots just wide. David Knight’s shot was the last touch of the game as 97 fans watched Thurrock win 1-0 today.
The Fleet will be happy with the late win especially as Tilbury scored a late winner against VCD Athletic to close the gap to 1 point at the top of the Ryman League North. Thurrock travel to AFC Sudbury next week and will be hoping to win their 5th game on the bounce. The Fleet’s next home game at Ship Lane is on Boxing Day against ground sharers Romford.
