Football: Grays slump to fifth league defeat in a row

Ryman Premier

Thamesmead Town 1 v 0 Grays Athletic

A WONDERFUL  free kick from a player who nearly signed for Grays Ath a few years ago, condemned the Blues to their fifth league defeat in a row.

Those defeats against Hendon, Leiston, Dulwich Hamlet, Maidstone and now Thamesmead Town leave the club just five points off the relegation zone. Grays have a number of games in hand but it is difficult to know where the next victory is coming from.

Derek Duncan’s goal came in the 69th minute.

When Kevin Kwarteng came on for Grays Athletic he was the 31st player to don the Gray Athletic shirt in 22 games.

Grays Ath have a tough week ahead, They travel to promotion chasing Bury on Tuesday and then welcome league leaders Kingstonians to the Mill Field.

To add to their woes, the players have had a 50% deduction in wages.

Chief executive, Joel Nathan went onto the fans forum to explain the situation.

Mr Nathan said: “The club would like to thank our first team squad who took a 50% deduction in wages/ expenses in January due to the bad weather and lack of games .

“We would like to thank them because even though there were no games, the boys trained 2 / 3 times a week and prepared for every game .

For the club, this shows how committed these players are and we sincerely thank them. The club hopes to get some of their deductions back over the coming months”.
