Essex 3 v 0 Sussex

ESSEX’S Under 16s Girls Schools representative squad had an astounding finish to a well deserved win in their final South-East England Schools Football Association (SEESFA) fixture against Sussex, winning 3-0 to earn them the title of league champions.

Essex started the match strongly, and at a fast pace. After 13 minutes, St Martin’s School’s Evie Clarke, the team’s Captain and England star, was awarded a free kick which she keenly struck home for a fantastic goal. Having grabbed the lead, Essex started to dominate the pitch, and the attacks start to multiply.

A team effort led to a diagonal driven pass from midfielder Emily Baker of Great Baddow School to the sprinting winger Katherine Gee (William Edwards School). She managed to place a perfect cross into the centre of the box, however the attack finished slightly wide. With worries of conceding a second goal, Sussex picked up their game going into the second half, making Essex switch on to ensure they kept their lead.

Lottie Wubben-Moy (Anglo European School) slotted into the centre of the pitch for the second half and it wasn’t long before she sent Clarke through with an inch-perfect pass. She latched onto the ball and brilliantly hit it into the top left-hand corner of the goal to make it 2-0 to her team on 78 minutes.

In the final five minutes of the match, centre-forward Miagh Downey (Phillip Morant School) carved out a typical ‘Downey’ goal through hard work and endeavour. Initially she struck the ball confidently at the goalkeeper, whose great save returned to Downey as she then rattled the post.

However, the committed number nine threw herself at the ball to ensure the second rebound was safely slotted into the back of the net. Having already won their league with an unbeaten record, Essex are now preparing to compete in the English Schools FA Inter-County Competition where they will face Dorset away in the Quarter-Finals.
