Mayor joins campaign for heart checks

THURROCK’Sfishheart mayor had a health check on Monday (10 February) to find out if he was at long-term risk of developing a heart condition or other illnesses

Anybody aged between 40 and 74 who has no pre-diagnosed long-term health problems, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, is
being urged to have a check.

To organise one, simply call Vitality on 0800 0778000 and arrange an appointment.

On Monday Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Tony Fish, joined Thurrock Council staff members having a check and Christine Smith a health trainer from Vitality undertook a series of tests – including, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Staff at the council have been joining in a variety of workplace health activities since the new year including, yoga, zumba and health walks as well as making healthy lunch choices from the new options in the in house café.

Cllr Fish said: “Although, of course, I do have a long-term condition, I think it is important to highlight that these health checks are available for everyone.

“Most people don’t go to see their doctor until there is a problem at which point it could be too late. These simple tests can identify potential health issues before they become a problem and action can be taken to stop them developing.

“Prevention is better than cure every time.”
