Bus information in lights

ELECTRONICensign signs at Thurrock’s bus stops are now providing improved departure information.

The signs show timetable information for bus services, with predicted departure information on routes where buses are equipped with the technology to do so.

Ensignbus operate various services within the borough that have the capability to communicate with the new system and other operators are soon to follow.

Thurrock Council – with Essex County Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council – have been working on the system across the county and the Automatic Vehicle Location System is now active.

The councils will continue to work with bus operators and other partners on further upgrades for the system.

Displays are being fitted with audio abilities so announcements can be made using the Royal National Institute of Blind People React 3 system.

Downloadable phone and web travel information is also being developed.

Cllr Andy Smith, Thurrock’s portfolio holder for highways and transportation, said: “This is a great improvement on the old system and now local people using the buses will have up-to-date information about their bus.

“We are working on other technological developments too so that people will be able to time their trip to the bus stop perfectly, using their mobile phone and so on.”
