Cricket: Belhus play Mistley for cup

At North Stifford Village Green on Sunday, Belhus stormed through to the Regional (Essex/Suffolk) Final of the 2014 National Village Cup after defeating Mistley CC, the North Essex club. Batting first in this 40-overs nationwide competition, Belhus posted a respectable total of 225 thanks to a masterly innings of 60 from Paul Bennett.

And in their run-chase, Mistley got off to a positive flying start but succumbed to the bowling duo of Paul Bennett and Joe Joyce who captured 5 and 4 wickets respectively to dismiss Mistley for 138 and carve an impressive 87 runs win.

In the next round on 8th June, Belhus face a 75-mile trip to play an away match against Worlington CC in Suffolk in the Regional Final, and have their sights set optimistically on the Grand Final at Lord’s on 7th September.

THE SHEPHERD NEAME ESSEX LEAGUE

West Essex 168
Belhus 1st XI 170 for 3

After a couple of stoppages for rain, West Essex were only able to reach a total of 168 thanks largely to Zia Anwar who struck a sensible 37. Connor Day and Mat Lewis Junior took 3 wickets apiece. In reply, Belhus easily knocked off the runs as Mat Lewis Jnr enjoyed a satisfying afternoon in smashing 51 not out, and Joe Joyce stroked 48 to steer Belhus home to a comfortable 7 wickets victory.

Upminster 116
Belhus 4th XI 117-2

Batting first on a damp wicket at Ockendon Recreation Ground, Upminster were firmly in the driving seat at 102 for 2. But then Sheraz Shahid and Jack Plane entered the attack and bowled superbly to cause a dramatic collapse of 8 wickets for 14 runs and dismiss Upminster for 116. Super- spinner Shahid took 4 wickets for just 2 runs and Plane captured 4 for 30. In reply, Belhus eased to an impressive 8 wickets win as Greg Mendham stroked a stylish 63 not out.

Hadleigh & Thundersley 82
Belhus 5th XI 85-7

Stewart Farr (4 for 17) and George Maidment ( 3 for 12) combined superbly to bowl out Hadleigh & Thundersley for 82. After tea, and despite chasing a modest total, the Belhus batsmen were soon in trouble at 4 for 3, but then youngsters George Maidment (23) and Josh Reynolds (20) batted maturely to see their side home to a 3 wickets win and lift the 5th XI to second place their Division.

Belhus Sunday 2nd XI 154 -8
Ilford Catholic 155-4

At Barkingside Recreation Ground, Belhus could muster only 154 for 8 from their 40 overs, with Matt Vallis (49) and Andrew Williams (31) their leading run-scorers. In the run-chase, Ilford Catholic had little difficulty in knocking off the required runs and closed out the match on 155 for 4 to win an unexciting match quite easily by 6 wickets.
