FIRE CREWS were called to a fire in a flat above the Londis shop in Grays high street at 5am on Sunday morning.
Crews wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reels to extinguish the fire. The property was 60 percent smoke logged.
Five people from the flat had escaped from the property before the arrival of the fire service and they have now been made homeless following the fire.
An ambulance was requested to the incident for one man suffering from breathing difficulties.
Fire crews dealt with the fire by 07:42hrs.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, ECFRS will carry out an investigation.
