Thurrock Writers Circle

October report

By Joy Ridgewell

This October was the nineteenth anniversary of the Thurrock Writers Circle. Our founder is Peter Pascoe who regularly attends the meetings. Some members have been with the TWC from the beginning and others are newer members, but all give one hundred percent in putting their best into their work.

Chairman Joy Ridgewell welcomed visitor Peter Standling from Canvey Island Writers Circle who is now taking the position of Chairman at Canvey Island Writers from the retiring chair Doreen Kingsman an old friend of the TWC.

This year we had the latest Anthology printed and are busy working on another for 2015.

The TWC enjoyed the last week in September at a writing weekend. This was held at Davey Down and was of great value to everyone learning new themes and ideas, encouraged by our tutor Stephanie Wilson from Bridge Rd Adult College.

The Short Story Summer competition winner was Steve Grimshaw, with Cindy Barber gaining first prize for her poetry.

This month’s speaker was Sharon McGoven her book ‘Afraid’ about her life, told of a small child abused by a paedophile, her stepfather. This was terrifying and a huge trauma especially when later she started to write the harrowing story of what happened. Sharon is a very caring bubbly person and everyone was enthralled to hear her story. This book is now worldwide in many languages.

A meal out to celebrate the TWC achievements is to be held in January.
