Football: Aveley humbled by Maldon

Maldon and Tiptree 2 v 1 Aveley

HAVING beaten promotion contenders, Needham Market last week, Aveley will be very disappointed at losing to struggling Maldon and Tiptree.

But this is Alan Kimble’s new management team and with goals by veteran Cliff Akurang in each half it was no surprise that the Maldon team took all three points.

The home side took the lead after 17 minutes when a Nathan Korentang cross from the dead ball line found Cliff Akurang in front of goal and he had little difficulty putting the ball into the net.

Aveley’s first attack did not come until 25 minutes with a Junior Baker header that went wide. A minute later, they equalised through Lee Weemes.

The second half was dominated by Maldon attacks however the winner did not come until after 84 minutes when Akurang was fed through by Stevenson’s and slid the ball into the back of the net.

The Millermen do not have much time to think as they play league leaders, Harlow Town on Monday night.
