TILBURY’S One Community Development Trust’s VIP programme has proved a hit in more ways than one. The Volunteer Investment Programme was designed to help people from different backgrounds realise their potential by providing intensive one to one support, tailored volunteering and involvement in community activity. And it has had an amazing bonus.
One Community Chair Sarah Bryant said: “Through VIP we’ve been able to support 40 local people to gain confidence, strengthen their skills and feel inspired to be more active in their community. But what’s even better is that 16 out of the 40 participants have been able to get jobs as a result!”
VIP participant Andra said: “Volunteering at One Community gave me confidence for the future because I had faced so many barriers to employment due to my Eastern European background. With the support from One Community I was able to get a CV to a very good standard and interview preparations, and now I am doing a job in my field.”
Vivienne, another participant, said: “Volunteering on the ELITE programme as part of VIP helped me to build my confidence and strengthened my public speaking skills. It also motivated me to accomplish my goals and aspirations.”
VIP is supported by a grant from Comic Relief, managed by Essex Community Foundation.
