Update: Bin worker killed in horror smash in Grays

COUNCIL workers in Thurrock are mourning a colleague who was killed in a horror accident at a depot involving a refuse vehicle this morning.

The incident happened when a bin lorry was being driven out of Thurrock Council’s St Clements depot in Oliver Close at around 7.45am and was involved in a collision with a vehicle, believed to be a commercial lorry.

Details remain sketchy but it is believed that the worker, a bin loader in the Council’s vehicle, was thrown from it due to the force of the collision and sustained fatal injuries.

A statement from Thurrock Council said: “Following today’s tragic incident Thurrock Council will co-operate with the emergency services in their investigations and carry out its own inquiry into how such a horrific event happened and to ensure any lessons are learned.”

Chief Executive of the Council, Graham Farrant, visited the scene as soon as he was informed what had happened.

Council Leader, Cllr John Kent, said: “At present, of course, details are confused, but first and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those involved and we will do what we can to make sure they have all the help and support they need.”

A police statement said: A man has died following a road collision in Grays this morning (Wednesday, February 18).

It happened at around 7.45am in Oliver Close. A refuse collection vehicle and a heavy goods vehicle were in collision. The passenger of the refuse collection vehicle, who is in his 30s, was attended by ambulance crews but sadly died at the scene. Two people have been taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

Police have closed the road while forensic examinations take place. It is expected to reopen in the next few hours.

A1090 Oliver Close in Grays closed in both directions between the Oliver Road junction and the St Clements Way junction, because of accident investigation work.
