FIRE engines have been ordered to Thurrock unnecessarily, while some firefighters are not being alerted to 999 calls in a series of control room computer glitches, the Essex Fire Brigades Union (FBU) claims.
Since the new control computer system – a part of which should automatically alert or ‘mobilise’ the nearest fire engine – went live on January 14, the FBU claims more than ten incidents have occurred affecting Brentwood’s firefighters.
Essex FBU chairman, Riccardo La Torre, said: "On January 29 they had an emergency call that was a call to Chadwell St Mary and it should have been sent to Orsett and Rayleigh.
"Brentwood would not have had its fire cover. On the same day, both of Brentwood’s fire engines were at an incident on the A12 and this came up in the changeover shift.
"The new shift came on and we then waited for the machine to come back.
