West Tilbury WI: March report

PRESIDENT Margaret Camp opened the meeting. She welcomed visitor Olive Clay from Chafford Hundred WI.

This evening’s speaker was unable to attend so Secretary Lorna Jones rescued the position with a prepared story of her childhood in Barton on Water, a small country village. This was interesting as the village school was very small with only about thirty children. Just one toilet for girls and the same for the boys.

No sinks to wash their hands and sometimes quite smelly. Then the little bottles of milk that she remembered given to each child lovely and cold in the winter except when it was put in front of the large stove in the classroom and became warm.

Some of the older ladies agreed they shared quite a few of her memories and how times have changed.

An invitation has been sent for one member of each WI institute to attend the Queen’s Garden Party on 2nd June, this was put to Ballot and the winner was Hazel Green from Linford WI an associate member.

Future outings were discussed one with Perrywood Garden Centre end of November decided on .

WI AGM at Colchester this month, members decided to make a donation for George Mills Charity as some are unable to attend.
