    THURROCK Labour’s parliamentary candidate, Polly Billington has slammed Network Rail over the threat to close the level crossing at Grays.

    Polly Billington said;

    "Anyone who uses a wheelchair or a pushchair will be effectively locked out of Grays by closing the crossing, driving them to make a ten minute detour. The footbridge is steep and difficult for people with mobility issues to use. We can’t let the stupid behaviour of a few make life harder for people just trying to get on with their day. The impact on businesses in Grays would also be horrendous.

    "People are appalled by the proposal, and when they see the footage from the CCTV they are horrified by the risks people are taking, to dodge fares or to shave minutes off their journey.

    "People in Thurrock are fair-minded and will understand that we can all do our bit to make the crossing safer, by using it more sensibly and urging others – our own family and friends – to do so.

    "But Network Rail also needs to commit to improvements rather than only issuing threats. We need a safer crossing and we have yet to see the colour of Network Rail’s money to contribute to this. So we as a community will do all we can to make the crossing safer if you do too – and commit investment to a safe, well-lit, accessible underpass".
