Over a dozen fire crews called to fire at mill in port of Tilbury

FIRE CREWS were called to Allied Mills in Tilbury Docks after fire broke out in grain machinery at height.

Initially four pumping appliances and a hose layer were sent to the scene but at 00:28 hrs, the incident commander requested the attendance of an aerial ladder platform and an additional appliance for manpower and water supplies.

At 00:51 hrs, an additional three appliances were ordered to the scene, along with the incident command unit and a specialist water officer.

At 01:17 hrs, the incident commander reported that the fire was in a grain conveyor belt – 10 per cent of the machinery was well alight and 20 per cent heavily smoke logged.

The fire was being fanned by high winds. An aerial ladder platform was being used to get water onto the fire at height and a water relay had been established as firefighting operations continue.
