Athletics: Vets impress on the road

THURROCK’S 50+ men did the Club proud on Saturday by taking the silver medals in the Essex Road Relay Championships. Twelve club athletes travelled to the other end of the County to tackle the 5k course along a blowy Dovercourt sea front.

The 50+ team, weakened by the absence of Jon Metcalf and Eamonn Shelley, remained a strong one. In form Don Lawless gave them a tremendous start with an 18m30s leg. Mick Bumstead conceded the lead but only to Colchester Harriers with a great time of 19m48s. As last year Bernie Johnson came on as a last minute sub and ran a gritty 5k (21m28s) to land the silver

The V35 ladies team were 5th. Toni Noble 20m44s, Amy Trencher 21m58s

and Jodie Farrell 21m48s were frustratingly close to medals.

Also 5th were the V40 mens team. Scott Rice was the clubs faster performer on the day with 17m2s – a run that shows the Grays based veteran is back to his best. He was supported by Nick Trencher 20m2s and by Keith Willett – with an eye-catching

time of 18m48s.

The ‘B’ team were 9th. Jason Syrett’s all round strength was suited to do battle in the blustery conditions and he returned 19m36s on stage one. Martin Mack 20m30s and John Russell 22m32s completed a good team performance.

The track season is looming and many club athletes will be using warm-up pre-season meetings this weekend. The endurance runners, young and old, will tackle the Good Friday Crown to Crown.
