Kennington super-heroes get on their bikes!

KEY Stage 1 and 2 children at Kenningtons Primary Academy dressed as their favourite superheroes to raise money for sustainable travel charity Sustrans.

The fundraising day was part of the Big Pedal, an inter-school cycling and scooting competition for primary and secondary schools which took place in March.

Participating schools competed with one another to make the most journeys by bike or scooter over 15 days.

Kenningtons won a Mountain Bike Stunt Show for Best Effort during the competition.

Thurrock Council’s Sustrans Bike It officer Hannah Brittain also presented class 2G with the ‘Bike It Champions’ trophy for racking up nearly 200 bike and scooter journeys during the competition.

Hannah said: “It was really encouraging to see so many pupils dressed as superheroes and enjoying themselves whilst supporting our work.”

Amanda Wynne, the school’s cycling champion, added: “There has been a good increase in pupils travelling to school by bike, scooter and on foot over the past two years. Well done Kenningtons and let’s keep up the good work.”

The Aveley school has been participating in Sustrans’ School Mark scheme and recently achieved Bronze status. This is awarded to schools that have worked to help pupils, parents and staff travel in more active and sustainable ways.
