GOVERNMENT inspectors have released positive reports on three Thurrock primary schools in the last few days.

Early last week Herringham in Chadwell St Mary, secured a “good” Ofsted rating following its first inspection as an academy.

On Thursday (16 April) the inspectorate issued its report on Stanford-le-Hope Primary in Copland Road.

The school, which has been in the “requires improvement” category since (??), now boasts three “good” recommendations, although it still needs improvement in the quality of teaching and pupil attainment sections.

Thurrock Council’s Director of Children’s Services, Carmel Littleton, said: “The council and the school have been working together closely and that work is showing results.

“The school’s overall leadership, the behaviour of its pupils and its early-years provision are all rated as good and I am confident Stanford-le-Hope will be a ‘good’ school in Ofsted terms soon.”

She added: “The report says the school has ‘high expectations of pupils’ behaviour and sets similarly high aspirations for teaching and learning’ highlighting our – and Ofsted’s – confidence for the future.”

On Monday (20 April) Ofsted released their “good” inspection for Benyon Primary in Tyssen Place, South Ockendon, like Herringham, its first inspection as an academy.

The inspectors’ report highlights a wide range of positive things about the school, including how leaders “including governors and trustees, work effectively in partnership across the academies in the trust. As a result, teaching is good and achievement is improving.”

The report says the reasons the school is not yet classed as “outstanding” are because boys make less progress in writing by the end of Year 2 and the most-able do not always attain the higher writing levels by this time; and a “small number of pupils from Traveller backgrounds miss too much school and, as a result, fall behind their peers in writing”.

Ms Littleton said: “The improvements in school performance of all types, and at all levels, continues to grow.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved, not just in these three schools, but each and every one of our schools and academies, for all the hard work they are putting in to ensure Thurrock’s young people have the best possible chance to succeed.”
