Cricket: Stanford seconds fall to another defeat

Leigh-on-Sea 2nd XI – 176-1

Stanford-le-Hope 2nd XI – 172-8

A lack of application with the bat and penetration with the ball saw Stanford fall to a sixth defeat of the season away to Leigh-on-Sea.

Stanford won the toss in this fixture at Chalkwell Park with skipper Drew Robinson opting to bat first and take advantage of the hot cloudless conditions. Despite openers Alex Ellis (33) and Jordan Dodd (26) setting a platform with a stand of 51 a middle order collapse thwarted Stanford’s chances of posting a competitive score.

31 from Jack Carter and a late cameo from Daryl Woodford (19 not out) helped the away side to a semi respectable 172-8. Hassan Mazhar (2-22), Joshal Patel (3-36) and Matt Wallace (2-23) were the pick of the Leigh attack.

After tea the home side made light work of Stanford’s total knocking it off for the loss of only one wicket with 10 overs to spare.

Bob Curtis was the mainstay of the innings with a well crafted unbeaten 84 ably supported by Simon Wallace (47 not out) and 22 from Jim Kyles.
