THURROCK Conservatives have expressed their anger at an apparent lack of action over traveller incursion into land in Thurrock.
Conservative Leader Cllr Rob Gledhill said: "In March of this year, I proposed Thurrock Council look at obtaining a court injunction to stop any traveller group illegally pitching up in the borough like they have in Essex, Harlow and indeed Barking and Dagenham.
"Since then the only action taken by this Labour-run council has been to say "It is possible", and that was only after I chased it up.
"The public sacking of the Labour cabinet member for public protection this week not only shows they are in disarray but prevented us from asking why he had done nothing on this issue.
"Their inaction has yet again left Thurrock exposed to these unlawful incursions, this time on a massive scale. Clearly Thurrock Labour do not want to protect our borough or enact the will of those who do.
"I have contacted the Essex County traveller unit, who I am sure has started action to remove them, but you can guarantee they will just move to another site in Thurrock and continue to play the system.
"Sacking the Labour Councillor responsible for this for this isn’t going far enough – either Labour step up to their responsibilities and take action or they step aside and allow those who will to do so."
