THE Veterans team have made their regional final which is to be held in Bedford in September.
Team manager, Bernie Johnson, succeeded in getting 14 athletes to last Wednesday’s match at Lee Valley. They tended to be runners from the endurance section of the club who threw themselves into a series of unfamiliar events to gain invaluable points.
Marek Kowalski proved an outstanding asset again. He finished 2nd in the 200m and only just missed snatching victory in the 4 x 100m relay with a startlingly quick last
leg.
Best of the rest was Scott Rice’s 6m22 2km where he was beaten to 3rd
place in the 3 man final sprint but his time was impressive. The other winners
were the 50+ 4 x 100m relay team and Mick Bumstead in the 60+ 2,000m.
The final top 3 team scores were Southend 417, Thurrock 364.5 and Chelmsford 355.5 which meant that Thurrock had made it to the final for the first time.
The three strong women’s team managed to amass 57 points. Again they were endurance runners who competed enthusiastically in the field events.
