Essex and Suffolk Water keeping Thurrock refreshed

ONE million bottles of high quality drinking water have been handed out to local communities over the past decade by an East of England water company.

Essex & Suffolk Water’s support for local community and charitable events in need of access to water for drinking started in 2005 and has now past a huge milestone.

Sarah Pinkerton, Essex & Suffolk Water’s Partnerships Manager said: “This is a great milestone and shows Essex & Suffolk Water’s commitment to supporting local community events and giving something back to the customers we serve.”

The one millionth bottle is expected to be given out at Stanford-le-Hope’s Community 5k trail run on Sunday 16 August 2015 at Essex Wildlife Trust’s Thurrock Thameside Nature Park.

Phoenix Striders Race Director, Nicola Burston said: “Runners love this support as it helps them to stay hydrated on a tough course and as an organisation it is great that our local water company can support a big community event."

Each bottle contains 250 millilitres equalling a massive 250 thousand litres of water given away, or 3125 baths over 10 years!

The bottled tap water scheme for charitable events is a popular donation towards some of the county’s most successful fun runs and other outdoor activities run by local charities.

In Essex more than 70 events were supported with bottled tap water over the last year and have included a charity bike ride for the Basildon Rotary Club, Southend half-marathon for Havens Hospices, Great Waltham charity fun run and the Race4Business held in Chelmsford.

“Each year we try to support as many events as possible in Essex with this form of charitable donation. As well as giving a boost to the charity’s event, we also hope it will remind recipients of our top quality tap water about the importance of staying hydrated,” Sarah said.

“Our bottled tap water is just one of the ways we help community and charity events. We also provide support by the donation of grants from our funds held with the Essex Community Foundation and through our employee volunteering scheme, Just an hour,” she added.
