A former Thurrock Labour councillor Terry Brookes is under investigation in relation to possession of indecent images of children.
An Essex Police spokesperson said: "Essex Police arrested a 58 year old man in Grays on suspicion of possession of indecent images of children.
"He was arrested on July 20th and taken to Grays Police Station for questioning.
"He was bailed until December".
Mr Brookes resigned as a councillor for West Thurrock and South Stifford last month, triggering a by-election.
Before that he was removed as the portfolio holder for crime by the leader of the council, John Kent, after a series of no shows.
BBC Essex say that they have spoken to Terry Brookes who says" he resigned from Thurrock Council to prove he is innocent of having indecent child images."
