INTU Lakeside is proud to announce that it will be giving 53 schools in Essex membership of the National Literacy Trust‘s Network, making for a fantastic start to the new school year. The Network supports schools to develop outstanding literacy provision by providing literacy leaders with tools, resources and inspiration.
intu Lakeside’s sponsorship means that schools throughout Essex will have access to a range of online resources to help plan and evaluate classes, plus examples of best practice from other schools. Each term the National Literacy Trust will provide schools with resources for particular themes, for example, boys’ and girls’ fiction and supporting struggling readers and writers, to improve children’s literacy. The latest edition of the comprehensive Literacy Guide for Schools, which has recently been published, is available on the Network now.
The National Literacy Trust’s Head of Partnerships, Lisa Rootes said: “There is a range of online resources on our Network to help teachers plan and evaluate classes. Our Network helps literacy leaders to improve the quality of their teaching by sharing ideas and keeping them up to date on the latest research and policy developments.”
This activity comes as part of intu Lakeside’s on-going partnership with the National Literacy Trust and the centre’s commitment to helping raise literacy standards in the local area. intu Lakeside is determined to inspire children and their parents to pick up a book and get reading.
“Reading and writing can bring so much joy as well as build minds and inspire our children,” explains Donna Callandar, Marketing Manager at intu Lakeside. “Earlier in the summer we delivered books to a number of local hospitals and the books were so popular that we wanted to bring the joy of literacy to children throughout the county.”
In 2014 intu Lakeside won the intu Properties Chairman’s Annual CR Prize for their work with the National Literacy Trust. The award celebrates projects, which are not just one-off but seek to promote collaborative support over time, reiterating intu’s ongoing commitment to community projects. Furthermore, in May 2015 the centre won a BCSC Purple Apple Merit Award for work done with the National Literacy Trust through the centre’s Kids Club. Even award-winning children’s author, David Walliams, got involved in the action by hosting a lively storytelling session at the shopping centre.
