SHOPPERS at INTU Lakeside will be greeted by an unusual sight on Saturday, 12 September.

Eleven of their student officers will be taking part in a gruelling static cycling and rowing challenge, where they hope to complete 264 miles over the course of the day – the same distance from the Thurrock shopping complex to the Eiffel Tower.

The students, part of Essex Police College’s N Intake, are putting themselves through this ordeal in order to raise much needed funds for The J’s Hospice.

The hospice, based in Great Baddow, offer respite and hospice care for young adults suffering from life threatening and life limiting conditions across Essex.

College training staff and officers will be at INTU Lakeside to offer encouragement – as well as to put the students through their paces!

Officers of INTU Lakeside’s Local Policing Team will also be on hand to greet shoppers, as well as offer crime prevention advice throughout the day.

Student officer Jenna French, who helped organise the event alongside colleagues from Essex Police College’s N intake, said: "Even though the prospect of rowing and cycling 264 miles in a day is quite daunting, we’re really looking forward to it!

"It gives us the opportunity to raise money for a deserving cause – The J’s Hospice is committed to helping young adults who have life-limiting conditions to live their life to the full.

"We’re also looking forward to meeting shoppers who are there on the day – and who can give us support and encouragement along the way!”

The team will be at INTU Lakeside from 9am until 9pm on the day.
