Thurrock Council confirm they will tear down historic South Ockendon pub

    LAST month, we spotted that planning permission had been granted for the demolition of a historic and much loved pubic house in South Ockendon.

    A petition was started and soon gained hundreds of signatures.

    Last night, at a meeting of the Labour-run cabinet in Thurrock Council it was revealed that Thurrock Council are the organisation that plan to demolish the pub and build the new council houses.

    Permission was given on May 2nd, for the demolition of existing public house, the Prince of Wales in West Road, South ockendon and outbuilding, erection of 1 x studio flats, 4 x 1 bedroom flats and 4 x 2 bedroom flats with 12 parking spaces.

    The petition stated: The building was built in the eighteen hundreds, it has been a public house since 1851 at least, although in the past few years it was bought and turned into a private dwelling with a shop.

    "The building is of a timber frame design retaining quite a few original features. There is not much left of the old South Ockendon and what is left the council are slowly destroying.
