Royal Opera House Youth Vocal Leaders
Application deadline: Friday 18 September
The Royal Opera House wants more people across Thurrock to get singing. The Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus is recruiting again and an exciting new opportunity for young singers is open for applications.
The Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus has been established for five years and now performs regularly in Thurrock and in London at The Royal Opera House and in festivals. The 100 + strong choir performs a repertory of traditional opera and contemporary work. All singing abilities are welcome and no previous singing experience is needed to join.
Recruitment for new members takes place only once a year so anyone aged eight years and over who has a passion for singing should come along to a free taster session and find out all about singing with the Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus – a singing group like no other.
The free taster sessions take place at Palmer’s College in Chadwell Road, Grays on Monday 28 September and Monday 5 October from 7.15pm.
YT spoke to one of the established singers in the community chorus, Rosemary Mathewson and asked her what have been the benefits of being part of the chorus.
The Royal Opera House is also offering a new scheme for young people across Thurrock to develop their singing and leadership skills. The Youth Vocal Leader programme is open to 13-25 year olds who live, work or study in Thurrock and who want to lead their own singing groups in the community.
Exploring the music and stories of opera, the Youth Vocal Leader programme offers training in different aspects of music and vocal work from conducting to composing, singing to dramatic performance.
Young people will gain the skills and experience they need to get singing with their peers in their schools or, colleges, youth clubs, community centres or workplaces. This could be anything from forming a small trio or ensemble to rehearsing and conducting a school choir, or even the whole school! It is up to the young vocal leader to decide how they use their training, with the support of the Royal Opera House. The deadline for applications is Friday 18th September
