The Best Allotment Garden category is sponsored by Smiths Orchard Garden Centre with the winner receiving ‘Uncle Ernie’s Memorial Trophy’ in memory of Helen Bradwell’s grandfather who was affectionately known as Uncle Ernie and a keen allotment holder.

This year 1st prize went to Mark Gibbons; 2nd prize to Andrew Klecha and 3rd prize to Colin Miller.

“As usual the judges were impressed by the enthusiasm of the children who are involved in a variety of gardening activities within their schools and the range of different and innovative ways in which they were utilising their outdoor spaces and learning about nature…..from growing vegetables and flowers from seed to providing wildlife habitats for insects and other creatures”

Certificates are awarded in each category for certificate of merit, bronze, silver, silver gilt and gold with the winner of each category receiving a Thurrock in Bloom glass award. The Mayor was in attendance to hand out the certificates and to congratulate our winners.

“A special mention was given to our youngest allotment garden entrant, Jack Day for his allotment garden at home and his edible hanging basket. Jack is just seven years old but the judges were impressed by his enthusiasm for growing vegetables which he tends on a daily basis.

Jack received silver awards for his allotment garden and edible hanging basket plus a wooden bug box to encourage beneficial insects to his vegetable plot.”

I have spoken to Jack’s mum who is happy to speak to you if you wish to run a separate article on Jack’s allotment and vegetable growing …..her contact details are as follows: Terri Bryant 07905 647976….it would be great to get more young people like Jack involved in Thurrock in Bloom or generally involved in gardening.
