A CYCLIST from Grays has been fined £220 after being stopped by police for riding at night without lights.

Roman Abramov, 23, was also told to pay £90 in costs and a £22 victim surcharge after being found guilty of the offence at Chelmsford Magistrates court on Tuesday October 13.

Roman was stopped by officers conducting casualty reduction patrols in London Road, Purfleet on Thursday February 19. It was dark, visibility was poor and his bike was not fitted with lights or reflectors which made it very hard for other road users to see him.

Ps David Martin said: "Cycling in the dark without lights is extremely dangerous both for the rider and for other road users. This result shows that illegal behaviour by cyclists will not be tolerated in Essex.”

Essex Police are committed to reducing injuries and deaths on the road and cyclists caught for offences such as cycling on the footway and not obeying traffic signs are offered the opportunity to complete an online cyclist education course. This course costs £19.50 and takes around 30 minutes to complete. If they do not complete this course they will be put before the courts.
