Heartless vandals destroy toddlers’ play equipment in Tilbury

FOR the second time in a year vandals have destroyed toddlers’ play equipment in Tilbury.

The £24,000 equipment, at Brennan Road, was replaced by the original funders – Fields in Trust, formerly the national Playing Fields Association – when it was destroyed in November 2014 and before it was handed over.

However Thurrock Council is now responsible and the cost of replacement following the latest arson attack. The cost equivalent to approximately £8 for every home in the Tilbury St Chad’s ward, will fall on the borough’s council tax payers.

Cllr Jane Pothecary, Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said: “This playtime equipment is designed for toddlers. How can these mindless vandals destroy something that would bring so much fun and enjoyment to their baby brothers and sisters, it’s beyond belief.

“One way or another, the council will have to foot the bill, either by reimbursing the trust or replacing the equipment.”

She added: “I understand the police will be carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the area and I would urge anybody who saw anything, or anybody who may know who carried out this malicious and wicked act to let police know about it.”
