VIDEO: Storm Barney causes freak wind-assisted own goal during Thurrock v Romford match

Many footballers of various abilities will have face adverse weather conditions on parks and greens around Essex.

But one goalkeeper experienced a nightmare situation this week when a long-range aerial pass got caught by the wind of Storm Barney and blew in the opposite direction into the net.

Thurrock defender Kamarl Duncan who, in the 23rd minute when his clearance from some 50 yards away from his own goal looped up in the air, caught the wind, and after gaining momentum caught out keeper Rhys Madden.

His team were playing at their home ground, Ship Lane in Aveley, against Romford FC on Tuesday night (November 17) in the Ryman Football League, Division North.

Storm Barney’s 60mph winds also caused power outages across large swathes of Essex.

And The Met Office were forced to issue a yellow ‘be aware’ warning covering much of southern England as the peak of the wind began at around 10pm and finished around midnight.

The home team did manage come back to claim a draw through Ross Wall.
