THURROCK Conservatives and UKIP councillors came together to pass a motion that called for the re-introduction of Grammar Schools in Thurrock.
The motion was proposed by the shadow deputy leader of the Thurrock Conservatives, cllr James Halden.
In his proposal, cllr Halden states that "It is competition that drives up standards".
He described the re-introduction of Grammar schools as the "next logical step".
Members of all parties contributed to the debate with UKIP backing the Conservative proposals.
Council leader John Kent issued a stern warning that if the motion was passed it could
put the plans for a new free school in Chafford Hundred with Harris Academy in doubt.
